Sustainability

Sustainability at St Clare of Assisi Primary School

At St Clare of Assisi Primary School, we are committed to living out our responsibility as caretakers of God’s creation. Inspired by Catholic Social Teaching and our call to stewardship, sustainability is woven into the fabric of our school culture. Students, staff, and families are encouraged to make choices that protect and nurture the world around us, recognising that caring for creation is a sacred act of love and justice.

Learning Through Action

Our students don’t just learn about sustainability in the classroom, they actively live it. Through hands-on experiences such as gardening, recycling initiatives, and waste reduction projects, students witness the impact of their actions and develop lifelong habits that contribute to a healthier planet. These experiences are integrated across curriculum areas including Science, Geography, Religious Education, and the Arts.

The School Garden and Greenhouse

Our garden and greenhouse provide students with opportunities to grow their own food, learn about plant life cycles, and understand the importance of biodiversity. Working together in these spaces fosters patience, teamwork, and responsibility, while also cultivating a sense of wonder and gratitude for the natural world.

The Aboriginal Garden and Bush Tucker Space

As part of our commitment to respecting and learning from First Nations cultures, we are developing an Aboriginal Garden and Bush Tucker space. This area allows students to explore the unique properties of native plants, their cultural significance, and the deep connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with Country. It is a space for listening, learning, and honouring the wisdom of the world’s oldest living cultures.

Community Connections

Sustainability at St Clare of Assisi extends beyond the school gate. We are proud to partner with Conder Wetlands and other local organisations, giving students the chance to participate in environmental projects that make a real difference to our community. These partnerships help students see themselves as active contributors to the common good.

Student Leadership

Our Community Group Leaders inspire and guide others by promoting sustainable practices across the school. From running recycling drives to leading garden projects, these students model responsibility and care for our shared environment. Their leadership helps build a culture where every student feels empowered to make a difference.

Making a Difference

Through these initiatives, St Clare of Assisi students are empowered to see that small actions, whether recycling a bottle, planting a seed, or tidying an eating area, can have a big impact. Together, we are working towards a future that is fairer, cleaner, and more sustainable for all. In living our school motto, Be the Light, we shine with hope, responsibility, and love for God’s creation.
